AUTONOMOUS Made by: Alexander Rynéus & Per Eriksson, 2014. 14 min. English subtitles. A new, overwhelming era is approaching from the sidelines. The boundaries between what is real and unreal are becoming increasingly blurred through technological advances. How will we hold up in an era where humans are being replaced with robots, and the real world is almost perfectly simulated in digital realities? Is there a limit for what can be replaced? Autonomous is an intense, emotional look into a future that is already here.

3 STOLEN CAMERAS Made by: Equpie Media and RåFILM, 2017. 17 min. English subtitles.

The Talk Show: "Demystifying the Media Image of the Middle East" seminar

Through this talk show we will highlight the complexity and uniqueness of the Malmö-Middle East interlink.

More info / Register

The media in the 21st century has been presenting a Middle East as in continuous conflict, misery and poverty, leaving us with a society that is alien from our Swedish society – overshadowing our similarities. Through this talk show we will highlight the complexity of the Malmö-Middle East interlink due to the migration and refugee flow to Sweden that has resulted in an interflow of people between these two regions.

The artistic, intellectual and innovative segments of these societies are re-flourishing in the post-conflict era. The talk show will invite people that are “bridging” the two regions through their line of work through various initiatives (political, cultural and social) that enhance intercultural communication and understanding.

Thus, Malmö is not just a melting pot – it is also a place closely interlinked with the Middle East.

The talk show is co-created with our friends from Aktarr.

Speakers and more TBA shortly.

7:00 pm - 1:00 am

Following The Talk Show: "Demystifying The Media Image of the Middle-East" has come to an end, we will stay for some drinks and good times.

On stage, you will find songwriter Johannes Antreski performing his quirky chansons together with saxophonist Anna Jonsson and bass player Sebastian Nordström from Local Loco & the Idiots. The Excursion culture

Join us on a trip into the wilderness where we will explore future experiences in nature.

Sold out! More info

Join us on a trip into the wilderness where we bring together different perspectives on the future experiences in nature.

What services and solutions can make more people experience the power of nature in the future? Inspired by nature herself we look at this from different perspectives and with different backgrounds and competences.

Because the trend forecasts are quite clear: urban people of the future will also long for experiences in nature. They will long to do something meaningful. Something that feels real. At the same time, more and more people are not at home in nature. They have never made a fire, prepared barbecue sticks or peed in the blueberry bushes. They have never paddled, found their way using tree trunks or stayed overnight under the stars. And what happens if the urban people of the future venture out into nature on their own? Is that sustainable?

Welcome to The Excursion.

What You'll Learn

  • Meeting people from a variety of industries (expand network)
  • What are some future trends that will influence tourism trends to Skåne?

Grand Opening: "The age of...?" culture

This exhibition is part of a project where 8 design studios explore future scenarios through speculative design.

Sold out! More info

This exhibition, curated by Non Agency, is part of a two-year long project where 8 international design studios are working with the planet of Mars as a projection plane for critique and speculation to create spaces for discussion and debate about what it means being human on Earth today.

"The Age of…?" is the first of two exhibitions in the project and shows the design processes where the designers explore different future scenarios through speculative design.

As one response to environmental decay and increasing material scarcity on Earth, scientists and the space industry are investing in the potential of asteroid mining, planetary engineering and in-space manufacturing to meet the demands of our growing population. Much of the research and development today is primarily human-centered, very little has been done to consider the potential ecological impact on this unknown environment of Mars.

Is it easier for humans to imagine life on Mars than to change our destructive behavior on Earth?

At the same time, a growing understanding of that we as humans are not exceptional beings but rather fully entangled and dependent on other species, renders the urgency of our own extinction clear.

What if focus would shift from exploiting space, just as we have exploited Earth, to develop more sustainable lifestyles in mutualistic symbiosis with other species? What can we learn, or perhaps unlearn, by imagining and designing for multispecies life on Mars?

6:30 pm - 7:15 pm

What's Outside The Universe? seminar

See James Beacham's finishing keynote talk live at The Conference – for free!

Location: Slagthuset MMX

Our universe is bizarre. Why is most of the cosmos composed of mysterious dark matter? Why is the Higgs boson so strange? Why do atoms exist? The hottest-and-latest in physics suggests that the biggest puzzles of science could be elegantly solved if our universe were one of a possibly infinite number of universes. But is this a testable scientific idea, or eternally speculative? How do we talk about what's outside our universe?

Join Dr. James Beacham of CERN's Large Hadron Collider as he explores the edges of knowledge – including CERN's plans for a colossal Future Circular Collider – and how the future of science, technology, and innovation will be much wilder than we can imagine.

"Building Ethical Products" seminar with Panion seminar

How can we build products that empower our users?

More info / Register

We rely heavily on digital products because of their utility, but quite often our interactions with these products leave us feeling depressed, diminished and frustrated.

So how can we as designers and digital developers build products that empower our users? How can we build more mental health-conscious products that embrace finding a balance between our digital and analogue worlds?

These days utility isn't enough. We might not know it yet, but we want technology that enhances our capabilities and gives us a sense of agency and control over our lives rather than products that suck us dry of our time and attention.

So how can we build products that empower our users? How can digital technology be designed and developed in a more ethical way? How can we build trust and happy customers, with less focus on addiction and trickery? What KPIs should we be using to measure success? And how can we adjust the standards for what investors expect, regarding KPIs when assessing a product?

In other words, can we begin to shift towards measuring how a product positively impacts people's lives, rather than focusing solely on numbers that indicate how often the product is used, i.e. its addictiveness?

FILM: "PUSH" culture

Fredrik Gertten's brilliant new film explores who’s being pushed out of the city and why.

Sold out! More info

You are invited to join Movium and White Arkitekter at Biograf Panora on August 29. It's going to be a movie night with a gripping new film about how global finance is fuelling the housing crisis and making cities unaffordable to live in.

ABOUT THE MOVIE

Housing prices are skyrocketing in cities around the world. Incomes are not. Fredrik Gertten's new film PUSH sheds light on a new kind of faceless landlord, our increasingly unlivable cities and an escalating crisis that has an effect on us all. This is not gentrification, it’s a different kind of monster.

The film follows Leilani Farha, the UN Special Rapporteur on Adequate Housing, as she’s travelling the globe, trying to understand who’s being pushed out of the city and why.

“I believe there’s a huge difference between housing as a commodity and gold as a commodity. Gold is not a human right, housing is.” – Leilani Farha

World's Best Morning: "The Ever-Changing Working Life" seminar

Breakfast seminar with Unionen.

More info / Register

We love Fridays. And breakfast. And our community. Combine the three of them and you get the classic Media Evolution format “World's Best Morning”.

This particular one is hosted by our friends from Unionen.

Working life is changing rapidly with digitization and globalization, and new ways of organizing are accompanied by specific and partly conflicting norms and values. On the one hand, creativity, innovation, diversity and self-government is emphasized. On the other hand, rectification, rules and standardization is emphasized.

Commitment and digitization are issues for everyone, in addition to stress, unhealthiness and lack of leadership. What happens if the boss loses commitment, for example?

Unionen, together with Lund University and Odd Company, will explore what increased availability and a more boundless working life does to us working there.

New research from Lund University shows that not only the employees can be negatively affected by digitization and increased accessibility, it also affects the companies’ finances.

During this morning, we will take a closer look at a couple of really interesting aspects of the rapidly changing working life of today, as well as some related concepts – such as the “Pause Pod”, the world’s first private pop-up space dedicated for relaxation.

Speakers: Mats Pahlman, Unionen Martin Nordin, Lund University Eric Calderon, Odd Company

Breakfast between 8.00-8.30am, seminar between 8.30-9.30.

8:30 am - 11:00 am

This is an opportunity to be part of the creation of tomorrow’s community together with Midroc Properties, the Forum for Social Innovation South, Malmö university, the City of Malmö and a bunch of social innovators and creators.

Social innovations as such take place at several different levels in society. Individuals come up with smart solutions for how to do things better in our everyday life and in our cities. Civil servants and politicians challenge the borders of bureaucracy to renew politics. Companies renew their role and become not only for profit organisations. The academy creates social benefits through new perspectives and new knowledge to benefit for all. New technology and knowledge open up opportunities for new social movements in design thinking, sharing economics, nudging and circular environmental thinking among others.

The potential of social innovation is all about coming together. Join us for a co-created lab on components and ideas to create the future sustainable cities and communities with a learning centre as a driving force .

"Polarity Management for Leading a Change" workshop with Hyper Island workshop

This interactive session will introduce you to the Polarity Management model and allow you to get hands-on with it.

Sold out! More info

When you encounter a challenge in life, what do you do?

Often we see it as a problem and try to solve it. Sometimes this is the right thing to do, but what if it isn't a problem but an ongoing polarity that we need to manage well, rather than try to solve with one single answer?

Do we focus on improving quality or reducing cost? Should we spend time planning or take action? Do we need stability or change?

If it is a polarity, you must manage it and avoid applying traditional problem solving skills that will only increase the problem rather than help it. The Polarity Management model helps you to distinguish between Solvable Problems and Polarities, and helps you effectively manage those polarities most important to your organization’s success.

This interactive session will introduce you to the Polarity Management model and allow you to get hands-on with it so you can leave with tools and techniques you can apply right away.

Guided Exhibition Tour: "The Age of...?" culture

This exhibition is part of a project where 8 design studios explore future scenarios through speculative design.

More info / Register

The Malmö School: Housing and Urban Basics workshop

In this workshop, we'll explore how we can secure the right to housing as a fundamental human right.

More info / Register

The global housing market is worth three times more than the world's total GDP. In our cities this results in new apartments standing empty at the same time as the shortage of affordable housing is rampant.

This crisis is the starting point of the Shift, a new worldwide movement initiated by the UN to secure the right to housing as a fundamental human right.

The local government in Malmö has joined the Shift movement. Katrin Stjernfeldt Jammeh, Mayor City of Malmö, will talk about why the city decided to be part of the Shift and how it will affect housing and urban planning in Malmö. Now it is time for us: developers, politicians, architects, scholars and others to learn what this means for us and how we can work together to make the shift happen.

During this workshop – hosted by White Arkitekter and Movium – you will learn to understand the need of radical change, meet a professional network to cooperate with and learn how to lead this change of perspective in your own organization.

3:00 pm - 5:00 pm
